064: What I Learned from Childhood about the Importance of Embracing Change | Lisa York

Change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end
[Robin Sharma]

I don’t think I’ve ever reflected on my own childhood as much as I have since becoming a mum myself. I expect you feel the same.

Your childhood experiences shape and mould the things you do as a mum. You’ve bought your rituals from a time when you were a kid yourself into your own family today.

All the fun stuff. Like having pizza and a movie on a Friday night.
But there are also the things that you’ve decided never to do with your own brood. Because you don’t want them to feel the way you did growing up.
I hadn’t realised until I became a mum why I’m so pro change. Why I’m all for taking control of your life. And why I’m a firm believer that you have the power to shape your own future.

Turns out, it stems from my own childhood.

This week on High Five Friday, I talk about the importance of embracing change. Because if you don’t, it can cause a whole heap of problems that you didn’t bargain for.

061: How to Transform Yourself from a Hot Mess to Mindful Mom | Ali Katz

You can live the life that feels so good to you

[Ali Katz]

When you set out on your parenting journey you never planned on being a ‘Hot Mess’. However, there are days when that’s how you end up. I know. I’ve had those days too. But the great news is, it’s possible to change that. Tell me what you’d rather be. A Hot Mess or a Mindful Mum?

In today’s episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday we’ll be discussing how you can shift your experience as a mum by changing the way you deal with all that life throws at you. And it’s done through the use of mindfulness and meditation.

My guest today is SuperMum, Ali Katz.

Ali’s a mindfulness coach, meditation teacher, author, wife and mum to two boys aged 11 and 9. She loves sharing her passion for living a balanced life with others, and has been featured on MindBodyGreenStyle magazine, Fox 26 NewsHerFutureHouston Family magazine, and LiveMom.com. When not meditating, writing, teaching, or spending time with her family in Houston, Texas, Ali enjoys running, practicing yoga, and sipping tea.

Ali’s mission is to inspire mothers to leave overwhelm, stress and guilt behind and embrace a life of balance, presence and joy. What I love about what Ali has to share is that she keeps it real. She’s a busy mum herself, so she gets that you don’t have spare time to head off to a mountain top to sit cross-legged saying omm’s.

Instead she brings mindfulness and meditation right back into your crazy life, and teaches you how to stay calm and balanced even when you’re scraping dried on Weetabix off the carpet. Again.

I’m delighted to welcome Ali to my show as she’ll walk you through the reasons why meditation and mindfulness are so important in your every day life. And she’s here to help you see the importance of taking time to make sure you really are your very best self.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • How a serious illness was just the wake up call Ali needed to transform the ‘Hot Mess’ that dominated her early parenting years
  • The difficulty in fitting mindfulness into your busy life, and the 3 keys to successful meditation practise
  • The science. If you like facts, here’s the evidence of how meditation can rewire your brain
  • The simple exercise of having a stress/gratitude list and how to make it work in your life as a busy mum
  • Trigger plans for managing stress quickly – get into a better state in just 60 seconds
  • How mindfulness and meditation can help you make more considered and sensible parenting choices

 Hope you enjoy todays show!

059: Having it all; Career, Kids and Contentment | Sarah Argenal

It is possible to find meaning and purpose and peace as a powerful mom and professional

[Sarah Argenal]

Having a successful career takes energy, drive and determination. Long hours, a heavy work load and the pressure to say yes to everything can be overwhelming. But when you become a parent and throw children into the mix, combining work and parenthood can start to really swamp you. But you don’t want to give either up.

In today’s episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday you’ll discover a way through that fog. Because it’s possible to be committed, not only to your family, but to keeping your career alive.

My guest today is SuperMum, Sarah Argenal.

Sarah and her husband, Joey live in San Diego, California. They have a 3 year old boy Beckett, and are expecting their second son in June. After becoming a mum, Sarah found the demands of working in Corporate Litigation alongside juggling family life to be exhausting and overwhelming. So she started a futile quest for help and information. But there was nothing out there.

She knew that something had to change, if not only for herself, but for the many other corporate parents who wanted to keep a firm foothold in both worlds.  After hundreds of hours of research, Sarah created her own support system and founded the Working Parent Resource.

Sarah offers her community of like-minded working mums and dads reliable information and practical training to help them successfully manage their career and home life. Her Frazzled to Balanced™ Bootcamp “helps ambitious working parents slow down and reclaim their time so they can focus on what matters most.”

Today Sarah shares her journey of navigating her corporate career; keeping her relationships alive and her home life happy; and being the best mum she can possibly be. All whilst helping other parents figure out how to have it all too.

I’m delighted to have Sarah on my show today as she’ll teach you how to manage your time, conserve your energy; take time out to recharge and focus on you; AND achieve a happy balance between home and work.

Click to Listen:

In this episode, we talk about:

  • The struggles Sarah faced during the early parenting years when trying to balance her career and life as a new mum
  • Why it’s better to focus on your levels of energy, rather than the amount of time you have
  • How to eliminate, automate and delegate when tackling your never-ending to-do list
  • How to ensure you’re taking time out to re-charge and focus on yourself, despite having a full life
  • Managing the energy-zapping and toxic people in your life, so you can be surrounded by high quality and supportive people
  • What balance looks like in Sarah’s incredibly busy but extremely fulfilling life

 Hope you enjoy todays show!

If you would like to leave a comment for Sarah  then we’d love you to come and say hello.

058: Why Great Decisions Create Exceptional Mums | Michelle Dawson

Every decision we make is dependant on our values
[Tony Robbins]

The decisions we make shape our destiny.

Powerful statement, I know. But it’s true.

Whether good or bad, and whether you like it or not, the decisions you make have a massive influence over the way our life turns out.

But even knowing that, why do some people continue to make poor decisions day in, day out? Surely they just need a bit more self control.

Or do they?

This week on High Five Friday, Michelle Dawson explores why we make the decisions we do, and how we can get better outcomes without relying on self control.

054: Who am I? Finding Your Lost Identity | Lauren Wills

Who are you? asked the Caterpillar. I hardly know, sir …. I know who I WAS … but I think I must have changed.
[Lewis Carroll]

Motherhood, as you know, is a hugely transitional time. And in the fog of raising kids, it’s possible to completely loose the sense of who you are in all of this.

But exhale, because research shows that this is completely normal. And it’s OK. Because it’s all part of an evolving process.

You won’t feel lost forever.

This week on High Five Friday, I ask mum of two Lauren Wills, who is a PhD candidate studying the well-being of pre-school mothers, to explain how and why our identity changes when we become a mum.

050: An Easy Way to Prime Yourself to Face the Day | Michelle Dawson

You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine
[John C Maxwell]

Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore is not an act, but a habit.”

True words. But creating new habits isn’t easy for a rushed-off-your-feet mum.

But then, can you afford NOT to have daily rituals?

If mum of three busy boys aged 5, 3 and 6 months can find time to prime herself each morning for the day ahead, then so can you.

This week on High Five Friday, Michelle Dawson talks about the incredible power of a daily morning ritual to set you up for the day.

047: The Definitive Guide to Being a Successful Mum | Jody Moore

Once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well

[Jody Moore]

How do you know whether you’re being successful as a mum when there’s no measure? No pay rise, no promotion, no pat on the back.

In this episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday you’ll find out what success looks like in your role as a mum so you can go out and start to achieve it.

My guest today is SuperMum, Jody Moore.

Jody lives in Roseville, California with her husband and four children who are 14 months, 3, 9 and 10. Jody is a Speaker, Life Coach and Momologist. That’s right, a Momologist. She’s an expert on mums.

Through her work, Jody helps mums understand and define success and believes that happiness is a skill that can be taught.  Once Jody figured out how to change her own reality to a much happier one, she couldn’t keep it to herself and went on to found the Bold New Mom community.

In her decade of experience bringing up children, Jody knew her role as a mum was the most important one. Yet, like a lot of mums, felt it was the one she was the least qualified to perform well. This led her to learn about how to be successful in the ‘job’, and to reprogram her mind to achieve it. She realised that negative emotion and disappointment can actually be used to serve us.

Jody will teach you that being successful will help shape other areas of your life. In doing so, you can relieve yourself of the pressure to always have to get it right; drop your innate desire to continually keep your children happy; and start to retain your own identity despite the relentless demands of motherhood.

I am delighted to have Jody on my show today as she’ll help you understand that success is measured by things within your control, and will hand you the tools you need to excel as a mum.

In this episode, you’ll find out:

  • What a ‘Momologist’ is, and how they can help you
  • How to take pressure off yourself to have to always get it right
  • Why measuring success as a mum is so difficult when there’s no gauge
  • How you can start to measure your mothering success
  • Why you should start looking towards things you can control, rather than what you can’t
  • Why your desire to make your children happy could be holding you back
  • How to use negative emotion to serve you

 Hope you enjoy todays show!

030: Why You’re Still a SuperMum, Even When your Kids are Being Brats

When things go wrong, don’t go with them

[Elvis Presley]

My son hurling a mini quiche at the String Quartet last weekend was not my proudest mummy moment.

Now I know small boys and String Quartets are not good bed fellows, but then it’s not every day your mother-in-law turns 80.

Some things you just don’t want to miss out on.

But does that incident (and the cringe-worthy list of others that preceded it) make me a bad mother (even though it felt like it at the time)?

Heck, no!

I’m real. I’m normal. I’m learning. And I’ll try harder next time.

In this weeks episode of The Friday Café, Michelle Dawson and I talk about what you should be telling yourself when your children are not behaving at their best.

This weeks challenge:

My challenge for this week is to prepare yourself mentally for the difficult moments that will inevitably arise.  We’ve all had them. It will always happen and will do again, so be prepared! Remember the one thing you can control is that little voice in your head.

Tell me what you think?

Tell me in the comments. How do you feel when your kids are being rat bags? Are you thinking negatively about how other people perceive you? Or are you positively spurring yourself on inside your head? Do you tell yourself this nightmare will be over soon or do you struggle to see light at the end of the tunnel?
